The Quilts

Traditional Meets Modern

Community Outreach Quilt by STLMQG members

This quilt represents how modern and traditional quilting techniques and styles are interwoven in the fabric of quilting.  The green columns, pillars of traditional quilting, were pieced with green fabric of various sizes.  The coral bars were improvisationally pieces with a variety of designs.  The curves and arches in many blocks are a nod to the Mississippi River and St. Louis Arch.  Over 90 members contributed to the quilt.  Quilted by Annie Cook.

Artist Statement:  I love geometric forms, particularly curves.  I based this on a little sketch I made in my notebook one day.  I wanted the piece to have a lot of energy, so I chose bold colors set on a charcoal background for contrast.  To emphasize the horizontal movement, I also used a thicker, contrasting thread in some areas.

Techniques Used: Machine pieced.  Machine quilted without a frame (domestic).
