2023 Round Robin Challenge

  • Set Up

    • "Nests" of 5-6 "robins" with one "mama bird" for the duration.

    • Participants will choose a “signature” fabric at the outset to use at least once in each round.

    • Participants will use their signature fabric and other fabrics in any modern style they want, to each quilt top they receive until desired size is reached.

    • Each participant should add something to every quilt top in their group at least once and always include their signature fabric.

    • Participants will always pass the quilt top to the same person.

    • Increase overall quilt size by at least 3.5" per round.

    • Completed tops will be showcased at the November meeting.

    • Email photo of your work to guild email to be included in prize drawing.

    • Progress should be kept hidden/secret from the original quilter until the end.

    • Include a note to send with your original block that has your name, email, IG handle if you have one, and any notes about your inspiration, color preferences, and vibe you are going for.

  • Rules

    • Modern, quilt shop quality cotton/linen fabrics (JoAnn, Michael's, and Hobby Lobby fabrics are not suitable for this game).

    • No batiks, children's novelty prints, traditional fabrics (e.g. reproduction, feedsack, calico, vintage florals, etc.) Not sure? Ask your nest or don't use it.

    • If noted, do not use fabric colors the participant doesn’t like.

    • Wall hanging to lap size (24x24" - 44x44") (Pay attention to the shape participant has indicated)

    • Must include signature fabric in each round. (Do not swap them out between rounds.)

    • May add to one, two, three, or all sides of the quilt.

    • Use good sewing techniques. (Quarter inch seams, press instead of iron, etc.)

    • Do not square up between rounds.

    • Communicate with your "mama bird" if you will be absent during a pass.

    • Do not post on social media during rounds.

    • Email photo of your work by midnight of Friday before guild meeting to be included in prize drawing.

  • Goals

    • To create patchwork that is in line with the modern aesthetic.

    • To challenge participants to experiment and create work outside of their comfort zone. We are not shooting for the look of a traditional sampler. Get creative!

    • To help quilters practice their design and composition skills.

    • To practice good techniques and improve foundational skills.

    • To create something lovely that the original quilter will hopefully enjoy. This is not the activity for cutting corners or shoddy workmanship. Do your best work!

INSPIRATION

We have included several examples of directions you could take your patchwork; ranging from precise piecing to improv to wonky and abstract.
